Florence is said to be the birthplace of Renaissance which has had a turbulent political history. it was ruled by the powerful Medici family and was center of numerous religious and republican revolutions. San Miniato al Monte is a basilica in Florence, located on one of the highest points in the city. the basilica was built in 1018 and has been described as one of the most scenic churches in Tuscany. in front of the beautiful Romanesque basilica is the cemetery of the ‘Porte Sante’ (=’the Holy Gates’). the whole complex is surrounded by defensive walls, created by Michelangelo in 1533 which secure the remains of many celebrities.

one contemporary celebrity, considered an innovator, was David Bowie. the English singer, songwriter, actor and producer was a figure in pop music for fifty years. he received several awards and his record sales, that are estimated at 140 million worldwide, prove him to be one of the world’s most popular musicians. his work was characterized by (re)invention and strong visual presentation, influencing especially music, fashion and visual arts. he was a great visionary and creator. a change-maker. thank you, Ziggy. and safe travels.
