balancity [ 06.2012 | Olhão ]

my friend and I chose Portugal as our holiday destination in June 2012. I wasn’t prepared so I had no idea what to expect from the Algarve. from Faro we took the train east to Olhão – without having an idea how the village where we stayed was even pronounced. having the biggest harbor of the region, Olhão’s center is the sea – with fishing being the basis for most locals to make a living. clams, cockles, and oysters can be found around the lagoons of the ilhas. with its broad offer of seafood, as well as skilled fishermen cooking refined dishes following historical recipes, Olhão became popular as the culinary capital of the Algarve.
this was the picture that awaited us when we arrived by train. I was stunned by the warm welcome, in love with the soft colors of the evening sky. the calamity of the scene where earth’s borders meet the limitless sky. the beauty of the moment when the nurturing sun kisses the blue planet goodnight.

a sun dance actually is an annual ceremony by the Plains Indians of North America. the community usually gathers to pray for life, world renewal, and thanksgiving. they also dance to pray on an individual level and on larger scale – to ensure the connection of earth with the creative power of the universe.

this connection might today be felt even better by the female population, as it’s International Woman’s Day which celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
