Paris is the capital of France, situated on the river Seine in the north-central part of the country. ‘la Ville Lumière’ (= ‘the City of Light’) is located in the centre of the Île-de-France region, also known as the ‘région parisienne’. the Paris ‘aire urbaine’ is one of the most populated areas in Europe. the city is subdivided in 20 arrondissements and by far the most important centre of culture and commerce in the country.

the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris is a Roman Catholic church at the highest point in the city, Montmartre, the ‘Mount of Martyrs’. the popular landmark in Romano-Byzantine style was designed by Paul Abadie and built between 1875 and 1914. the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a symbol of a loving and compassionate Christ.
